(JS=95) Lots of plum and dark-berry aromas with intensity and ripeness on the nose and palate. Full body. Rich and layered with chewy tannins and a long, flavorful finish. Blackberries and black cherries. Better in two or three years. Try after 2021. (WA=93) The 2016 Assmannshausen Höllenberg Spätburgunder Trocken GG VDP. Grosse Lage is fascinatingly deep and intense on the ripe, concentrated, refined and berry-scented nose. This is fleshy, fruity and purely slatey on the nose yet at the same time very deep and simply gorgeous, with remarkable freshness and precision and some toasty notes as well. The wine is lush, round, mouthwatering and generous on the palate, with great intensity and warm, concentrated cherry and dark berry fruit. This is a full-bodied, intense, juicy, seamless, perfectly round and persistent Pinot with great class and generosity. The finish is refreshing, well-structured, very long and intense, with persistent toasty flavors. This 2016 is perhaps one of Gunter Künstler's finest Pinot Noirs ever. (AG=91) Along with smoky bacon fat and toasted oak, the nose here evinces ripe, lightly-cooked dark cherry and plum. The palate is expansive and satisfyingly fruit-saturated, underlain by impressively fine tannins so that it’s almost silky. Tang of fruit skin and piquancy of fruit pit serve for welcome counterpoint, while a savor of salted veal stock adds to the mouthwatering appeal of a seriously-sustained finish.
