(RP=97+) Just a touch darker in colour than the traditional Cuvee, the blockbuster 2009 Chateauneuf du Pape Vieilles Vignes is a big, full-bodied and concentrated beauty that's overflowing with Provencal notes of cured meats, garrigue, liquorice, black cherries and crushed rock. Thick and unctuous on the palate, it has put on weight since release, and the tannin is also sweeter and more polished, all suggesting it will have a long life. This is a gorgeous Chateauneuf du Pape!
(WS=96) Offers a deep, dark well of lush plum cake, hoisin sauce, roasted fig and cassis notes that seems to power on endlessly, while roasted mesquite, iron and incense fill in the background. Hefty but remarkably rounded, with a long, charcoal- and black tea-filled finish. Built to be one of the longer-lived wines of the vintage. Best from 2014 through 2030.
(AG=94) Opaque ruby. Highly fragrant aromas of black raspberry, cherry compote, lavender oil and Indian spices. Densely packed, focused and juicy, with intense red and dark berry flavours given spine and lift by zesty acidity. Shows serious intensity and finishes with outstanding clarity and floral persistence.
